HOPE, INSPIRATION, MOTIVATION and DREAMS

HOPE
According to ancient Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman created on earth upon the command of the Greek God, Zeus. Pandora was given several gifts by other greek gods and goddesses; among them was a coveted box. However, Pandora was told under no circumstances was she to open the box. Nonetheless, curiosity got the best of her and she ignored the warnings and opened the box. In doing so she let out all the evils of the world out into the world, but she closed the box just in time to trap one last virtue, HOPE. Ironically many interpreations of this myth focus on the explanation of why EVIL exists in the world today. My intention is to share an explantion of why HOPE still exists today.

INSPIRATION
To inspire is defined as “to influence, move, or guide by divine or supernatural inspiration.”
Dr. Deepak Chopra, a well known Indian-American speaker, author and teacher on Ayurvedic spirituality and mind-body medicine, has been quoted as saying “Inspiration comes from the same word as spirit. When you are inspired, the Spirit moves you.” Another definition of inspire is “to breathe life into.” As we start another new year I invite you all to allow yourselves to be inspired and let Spirit move you. Just as the Divine has given us HOPE, so has he shared many people to help INSPIRE and “breathe life into” those who need it. I also invite you to not only recognize the inspirations available to you, but to share them with others who can benefit from them as well. Keep the HOPE and INSPIRATION moving. Share them joyfully, willingly and lovingly. These actions will come back to you tenfold.

MOTIVATION
To motivate is defined as “to give someone a reason to do something, to offer them incentive or drive them forward.” Whereas Inspiration stems from within, Motivation is derived from outside motivating forces; for example, Money, Love, Lack, Necessity, or Fear. I’m not saying one is better than the other. I think there is a time and place for both and we should incorporate both, as well as Hope, as we gear up to face another year. Zig Ziglar, a motivational speaker who has published nearly 50 books on the subject, says, "It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude." He also says, "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing... that's why we recommend it daily." Very well put, Mr. Ziglar.

PRAYER/MEDITATION
In addition to daily motivation, I recommend daily prayer and meditation. Since Prayer is asking of the Divine and Meditation is listening for the response, one can’t effectively do one without the other. By having this daily communication we get in touch with our inner voice that connects us spiritually and enables us to be more aware of and open to the Hope, Inspirations and Motivations that are gifted to us constantly. Furthermore, if Motivation is merely a fleeting kick in the keister to move us forward, who better to receive it from than the Creator himself?

DREAMS
Another tool for the New Year I’d like to share is Dreams. Don’t forget to have them. Don’t discount them; for, Dreams have the power to Inspire and Motivate because they offer a glimpse of the Hope we can hold onto. A dream can represent a prayer or represent a meditative response. Believe in your Dreams. Don’t let anyone else make light of them. Make them your own and allow them to empower you. Furthermore, don’t hesitate to dream BIG. “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss you will land among the stars.” I recently had a fortune cookie remind me not to pursue happiness, but to create it. I’ve written over and over that to be joyful is part of the divine plan for all of us, but as Mr. Ziglar said it starts with the attitude. In other words it starts within us. We then co-create the rest. Don’t be your own worst enemy and don’t let your limitations overshadow your talents. Think of yourself as a surfer and Life as a wave and ride it out. There’s no predicting what the tides, water will do. React to shifts in speed or direction as necessary. Hang on tight and never stop believing in yourself.

Judgment Day – It may come sooner than you think.

If you judge people, you have no time to love them. – Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa’s words are so simple and yet so profound. Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary defines the verb “to judge” as to form an opinion about through careful weighing of evidence. Ironically, however, I believe that most people judge others without careful consideration of evidence. Most people are hasty in their impressions of others and judge them without evidence to actually support the judgment being made. Another definition states that to judge is to decide upon critically. This further worsens the judgment by not only jumping to a conclusion, but also jumping to a negative conclusion. I’m sure all of us are guilty of passing judgment at one time or another. It seems to be human nature to judge what is different or what we don’t understand. These irrational judgments are based solely in fear. All of us want to feel safe and loved and occasionally when we come across someone else who may appear to threaten those very necessary, basic emotions, we immediately judge them and label them so that we can safely put them in a place that no longer poses a threat. But, just as Mother Teresa proclaims, I’m here to say that it is far better to come from a place of love than a place of fear. Shifting our focus from fear to love is the key to practicing a life without judgment.

Judge not lest ye be judged. – Jesus Christ

How do you feel when you know someone has passed an unfair judgment upon you? Perhaps there was a time when you were having a bad day and inadvertently were rude to someone. Their immediate response, most likely, was to think you were a mean person. Most people don’t think to ask, “Is everything OK with you today?” They just know that they felt hurt when treated badly and they respond in kind. It is a fear-based reaction to a fear-based stimulus. What came first the chicken or the egg? I think that most of us judge others in retaliation of feelings, new and old, of being judged. However, while this may explain the behavior, it certainly does not excuse it. If you do judge someone unfairly and you realize it, don’t hesitate to apologize for it. In doing so you benefit yourself as well as the other person and may very possibly create a chain reaction for more healing.

If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. Michael Jackson –“Man in the Mirror”

So if passing judgment seems to come naturally to most of us as an unconscious, fear-based, behavior, how do we start to change that to a conscious behavior of love and eradicate, or at least minimize making judgments? The first step is to acknowledge change is desired and necessary. The next step is to start from within, as the first person to stop judging is you. On a spiritual level we have our True Self and our Ego Self. Our True Self is in constant alignment with Divine Spirit – God, and Love. Our Ego Self is governed by judgment, guilt, and fear of the material world. Honor and love your True Self, whomever he/she may be, and do not fear judgment from others by doing so. Let go and release all self-judgment. Be true to your own happiness. When you take responsibility for your own happiness, you take back your power for your own happiness. Recently I have started to work more and more with the Archangels, or Chief Messengers of God. Archangel Zadkiel, whose name means “righteousness of God” and is considered the angel of mercy because of his role in stopping Abraham from sacrificing his son, Isaac, as an offering to God, can help you to let go of judgment by seeing the Divine light within your True Self and others, instead of focusing on the Ego Self. All that you have to do is ask him and allow him to help you. It’s really that simple.

At judgment day a man will have to account for all the good things he might have enjoyed but didn’t. - Jewish proverb.

Don’t wait for the proverbial judgment day before you give yourself a life review. At regular intervals, from time to time, whenever it feels right, look at your life. Not to judge it, but to learn from it. A life review allows you to recognize and account for specific behaviors, actions, spoken words that you may wish you had done differently, so that if a similar situation presents itself again you have a second chance to make positive adjustments and do it another way. The aforementioned Jewish proverb is one of my favorites because it reminds us that to experience joy is one of our essential missions here on earth. It is written throughout the Talmud, the Jewish book of laws, that it is our duty to be joyful. We must pray with joy, we must express joy; we must live a life of joy. If we are centered in love and focused on joy, there is little room left for fear and judgment. So where as Mother Teresa said, “If you judge people you have no time to love them.” I say, “If you love people, you have no time to judge them.”

Michael Behenna First Lieutenant Michael Behenna is a young Army Ranger who is currently serving a 20 year sentence at Fort Leavenworth for “unpremeditated murder” of a known member of Al Qaeda. 1st Lieutenant Michael Behenna was an excellent officer. Hi Readers! First off, I’d like to thank those of you who emailed me with all the your wonderful compliments and feedback from last month’s column. I was pleased to know how many of you enjoyed reading the article and were inspired by to take on last month’s challenge to change just one thing in your lives in order to initiate a chain of events of change. I hope you are continuing with your progress and look forward to hearing more success stories, as I’d love to share them in future columns. For those of you who missed last month, I invite you to read the archive.

Last month I introduced the theory of energy of thought via imagination and your individual power to create the life you want to live. This month we’re going to build on individual energy and discuss the principle of a collective universal energy. Once again while these terms might seem New Age they are merely a rebirth of much older beliefs. I am writing this column almost 400 years after John Donne wrote his essay with the above quote and Donne’s work was published 1500 years after its original inspiration which was taken from the New Testament, Romans 14:7. The words may have changed, but the message remains the same. Solidarity…We are all socially and spiritually interconnected and with this knowledge comes the power to persevere.

I’m going to dare to go one step further and reveal that in addition to being interconnected with one another we are interconnected with a Source Energy, also known as a Divine Consciousness or Higher Power. It is this higher power that has the ability to not only unify us as a collective energy but to empower us all so that we may live the lives we desire to live… the lives we are meant to live. So, how do we tap into this collective divine source energy? We simply need to realize its existence and acknowledge our mandatory participation. By participating I mean to say accepting our interconnectedness as truth and acting as one group instead of one person. We must reach out to those in need as well as recognize and accept help when others reach out to us. We must truly believe with our hearts and in our souls that we are never alone.

I’d like to share a joke I heard years ago but remember often. A man is drowning at sea and he looks up to Heaven and prays for God to rescue him. A scuba diver swims by with a life preserver and the drowning man waves him away, saying, “God will save me.” Then a boat comes by and throws him a line. He doesn’t take it, saying again “God will save me.” A helicopter flies overhead and drops a rope. The man again turns away and says, “ God will save me.” At last the man drowns. At heaven’s gate he sees God and asks him, “Where were you? Why didn’t you save me?” God replies, “I sent the swimmer, the boat and the helicopter, the rest was up to you.” The drowning man not only turned away repeatedly from help that was within his reach but also failed to recognize the precise divine intervention he was seeking. I believe
that many of us do this on a daily basis because in our pain and suffering we focus on feelings of alienation rather than searching out our true connections, our life lines, our saviors, our Lucky Charms.

Lucky Charms, as I like to call them, are people and/or events that help us when we are least likely to reach out for help on our own. They can be someone we know, or a stranger who smiles at us for no reason, or possibly even a guardian angel in disguise. They can be a fortunate situation. For example, I consider writing this column to be one of my Lucky Charms as it allows me to connect positively with so many of you. They can also be a negative situation that challenges you to rise above yourself and find a strength within that you never even knew you possessed. I’m sure we all have at least one story of tragedy or despair where we somehow managed to emerge from the darkness into the light. This transition might have been due to the love of family, support of friends or even the growth of our soul. No matter what the source, Lucky Charms force us to acknowledge and embrace our connections to each other, to ourselves and to the collective energy of the spiritual world in which we live. In 1955 Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, a French philosopher and biologist, wrote The Phenomenon of Man and stated, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience”. Whichever statement you choose to believe is unimportant. The importance is to believe in the unifying existence of spirituality, to know that we are all connected and to remember we exist to help each other.

Remember a funky little R&B inspirational song that echoed the theme of solidarity? I’m speaking of the 1972 hit song “Lean on Me”. I wish I had space in this article to write all of the poignant lyrics, but here is the chorus.

“Lean on me when you're not strong, and I'll be your friendI'll help you carry on, For it won't be longTill I'm gonna need - Somebody to lean on”

At some point we all need somebody to lean on and the best way to ensure having a friend is to be a friend. So, this month I challenge you not only recognize the Lucky Charms in your life (including the hidden painful ones), but to be a Lucky Charm in someone else’s life. A friend of mine shared the term “Pass Along Therapy”, which is similar to the Pay It Forward principle. The Pay It Forward principle asserts if someone does you a kindness, turn around and do a kindness for someone else. This creates a chain reaction of kindness, universal energy in motion. The Pass Along Therapy principle focuses more on healing, asserting that if you help someone else you get the added benefit of also helping yourself. This can easily be achieved through charity and volunteer work. I don’t know anyone who has volunteered for a cause they believe in and not felt some sort of personal benefit from having done so. Personally, I am a volunteer for Hospice of Palm Beach as a patient visitor. There are no words to accurately describe the pure fulfillment of soul knowing I am helping someone through their darkest time. It raises me

high above myself where I can see more clearly and gain a perspective I wouldn’t have otherwise seen because it takes me out of the individual consciousness and into the collective
consciousness. I am a Lucky Charm for the patient and family members, but the experience is
absolutely a Lucky Charm for me as well. Albert Einstein once said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” If we can rise to a higher social consciousness and become a part of the collective consciousness or as John Donne said, “a piece of the continent” then we can uniformly welcome the opportunity of enlightenment and the ability to heal both our personal and universal pain so that we can rescue ourselves and mankind. The boat, the helicopter and the swimmer are all waiting for you to lift up your hand and grab on to hope, but don’t forget to then pass them along to someone else.

Once again I’d like to close with a song quote. This one is from The Beatles.

“Oh I get by with a little help from my friends. Oh I get “high” with a little help from my friends. Oh, I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends.”

(Note: Although I’m sure Paul and John were speaking of a different “high” than I am, for the purpose of this article think of it as a raise in consciousness and energy.)

Time in a Bottle.

Time in a bottle. If it were only so simple.

The concept of Time has been subject to many varying religious, philosophical and scientific opinions. It has also been used to coin many various phrases in an effort to explain, define and understand the fundamental physical, quantitative and cyclical events of past, present and future. Some may view Time as an enemy or an obstacle, but let’s examine the following positive attributes of Time to see what lessons can be learned.

Time marches on.
A wonderful example of the powerful blessing Time gives to us.

This month marks the Jewish High Holy Holidays, which include a 10-day period known as the Days of Awe. These ten days signify a period of reflection and contemplation; a time to forgive as well as ask for forgiveness, to make amends, and to vow to make positive changes. It is a time of a fresh start. I recently wrote on a Facebook post that I wished life was like an Etch-A-Sketch, erase and start over. I followed up with another post saying, we may not be able to erase, but we CAN start over. The kids are starting a new school year. They have new teachers, new friends, new sports teams. Make this your time to reflect on the past, but remember to live in the present. Make the most of a fresh new start and realize there is no time like the present as the present is truly a gift.

Time waits for no one.

In the science fiction/fantasy book A Wrinkle in Time the author depicts a fifth dimensional phenomenon where it is possible to “fold the fabric of space and time”. I’m sure we’ve all had days when we wanted to pause, rewind, or possibly fast forward Time, but for now other than in books even top quantum physicists have yet to figure a way to stop or bend Time. It continues regardless of our actions. However, we can maximize that phenomenon, that true constant, by keeping our eyes and hearts open and riding the wave into the future of possibility. Songwriters, Simon and Garfunkel, penned it well with these lyrics.

Time, Time, Time. See what’s become of me. While I look around for my possibilities….
Hang on to your hopes my friend. That’s an easy thing to say, but if your hopes should pass away, simply pretend that you can build them again. Look around.

All in good time.
Patience is a virtue.

This is a tough one for most people to accept. Whereas Time may not wait for us, opportunities often do. It is difficult, especially when we are in pain, to have to wait for what we want or what we feel we need. When we are facing challenges or living through low points of our lives is when we most wish we could manipulate Time so that we could simply blow past the troubled times and arrive at a happier place in time. However, as I’ve written before, it is in these troubled times that we find our strengths and lessons for growth. If we blew right through them, we would miss something that may become valuable to us in the future. The bright side is that it is always darkest before the dawn, which is what you should remember while you are enduring these twilight periods.

Divine Timing.
“Stick a fork in me, I’m done!”

Along the same principle of “All in good time” is the concept of “Divine Timing”. Clearly there are moments when we feel we simply cannot take anymore. Yet, the powers-that-be often have a different plan that follows a different timeline. Our challenge becomes to yield control to a higher power and to have faith that all will fall into place--eventually. We must try to find solace in the belief that whatever our current situation may be, Divine spirit is helping to find a solution. Why things sometimes take longer than we’d like or people sometimes leave us sooner than we’d choose; God only knows!

Timeouts. Quiet Time.
While we cannot stop or pause Time, we can take a break from action. We can take a respite from the endless chatter in our heads, the continuous running around to complete tasks and chores, and the never-ending hustle-bustle of a busy life. We can achieve this through meditation. Just as timeouts can diffuse a misbehaving child and bring them back to center, adult quiet time can bring us back into balance. It is said that in the eye of a hurricane (its center) all is peaceful, tranquil and safe. Meditation is a means to this end. Meditation may even be a way to temporarily suspend time, at least mentally, and give us the opportunity to appreciate the Time we have.

I wish you all the gift of Time for a life well lived, healthy, happy and abundant.
