Campers talk baseball during radio appearance - South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com

JASON STROMBERG Forum Publishing Group

July 29, 2009

There weren't any baseballs being thrown around the horn between Andy Raffa and his campers recently at the Crexent Business Center in Wellington.
The owner of the Players Edge baseball training program, Raffa put the gloves aside and gave headsets and microphones to John Lombardi, Nick D'Esposito and Kevin Mendiguren for an appearance on W4CY Radio.
"This is their added bonus for doing a great job for the week at the camp," said Raffa, who held the Summer Instructional Camp July 13-17 at Boca Prep International School. "Basically, it was my normal show. I got to talk to each of them individually about where they play, what school they go to and what events were upcoming. It was an open forum for them and a cool opportunity."
Raffa does a weekly sports talk show on W4CY.com Internet Radio from 9 to 10 p.m. Last week, Raffa chose to bring Lombardi, D'Esposito and Mendiguren on as special guests due to their dedication, leadership and solid behavior throughout the daily camp activities.
The 10-year-old Lombardi, who was the primary recipient of the Players Edge Game Ball and Leadership Award, said he was nervious about appearing on the program.
"I haven't done anything like this before," said Lombardi, an incoming fifth-grader at J.C. Mitchell Elementary School. "My friends were listening and stuff, so that was pretty cool. Being able to talk baseball was a lot of fun."
Raffa said Lombardi earned the notoriety with his performance as the academy's catcher and captain. "He's got a great attitude for the game," Raffa said. "When the other kids see that, they feed off it. You want a player like that on your team. He's a great clubhouse guy and he's probably going to be a captain on a lot of his teams. He's a good ballplayer who brings the intangibles. His personality and smile are great."
D'Esposito and Mendiguren were strictly business. Both received trophies for being named the Player of the Camp.
Mendiguren, 9, is an incoming third-grader at Unity Middle School. He admitted he was surprised to be nominated for the award. "I didn't think I'd be the one, but it felt pretty good," he said. "I was really trying my best, and it paid off. I was glad to be a part of the show."
Raffa also welcomed to the show the band Fallen From the Sky. The music was courtesy of W4CY owner Dean K. Piper.
Drummer and founding member Giancarlo Aservi said he was honored to sign autographs for the kids and send his message to listeners. "We do rock, and that's where we believe everything meets," said the 2002 Spanish River High graduate. "Rock never goes out of style. We want to be a timeless rock band."
Bassist Hazen Ziringer is channeling all his energy in that direction. The 2002 Olympic Heights High School graduate played junior varsity football under Raffa.
"When Andy asked us if we wanted to be on the show, we immediately jumped at the opportunity," said Ziringer, a family friend of Raffa. "This was something we wanted to do and we couldn't be more thankful."
Other members of Fallen From the Sky are guitarist Ky Morland, a 2003 graduate of Spanish River High School, singer Ryan Loughney and guitarist Justin Berke.
Morland sat in on Raffa's show, along with Aservi and Ziringer. "We're a punk-influenced rock band," Morland said. "We're a bunch of dudes that are trying to take this as far as it can go and enjoy each other's company. We can't wait to travel the world and see different parts of it. There's nothing better than playing."
Throughout the show, Raffa could sense his baseball students were pleased to be in attendance. He later explained why he picked Mendiguren and D'Esposito to join Lombardi.
Mendiguren, a left-handed pitcher, is "probably the most fundamentally sound player," Raffa said. "He's very natural in his baseball ability. When you're on the field with him, you can pick up on his love for the game. As far as his intensity is concerned, he strives to be the perfect player. He's a gifted young ballplayer. Really incredible."
As for D'Esposito, a middle infielder, Raffa added, "He's the quietest of the three and without question leads by example. He works incredibly hard and is the go-to guy when we need an infielder. He's always willing to go that extra mile to make the other players better. He may not say a lot, but he'll do the work and get it done."

Do you love Industrial music? Then tune into to The Power of Music right now on www.w4cy.com

What a Great Summer

W4CY radio has been so active this summer season. It started with our being at Taste of the West in June. Over 2200 people attended this expo with over 30 restaurants, plenty of business exhibitors and of course your favorites from W4CY radio. Great crowd, Great food and lots of fun. Thanks to Anitra, Kat and the rest of the Palms West Chamber of Commerce staff for creating such a wonderful event.
It wasn't over there! W4CY sponsored the K.O.A.M. festival. It was a benefit for Kids on a Mission. There is nothing as satisfying as doing an event that helps those children from families in need. The day was HOT!! The crowd was good and of course we had the crew from Fan base, Power of You and Peter's Livingroom there to make the day enjoyable. Oh yes, the music helped that too. We even had visitors from San Diego attend the event. This 9 year old, Alyssa even went toe to toe with Danny Ryde from Fan base. She let him know what are really the games and comics people should be into and why!

Then as our way of remembering the 50's and 60's, W4CY broadcasted live from the Nifty 50's party at the Cottage in lake Worth. What a great night. Dj'd by DJ Frank, Dean, Peter and special guest DJ Mike Miller of Harmony Street, we partied like it was 1959. This was the way we geared up for the lake Worth Playhouse production of Grease. Great Theater! Great Show.
Then as our tribute to Independance day, on July 5th we went to Port St. Lucie and help sponsor the 1st Annual Freedom festival. This was a benefit to recognize and help raise funds for Forgotten Soldiers outreach. They send care package to help our soldiers overseas. Hosted by ' The Paisan of PSL, there was also a day and evening full of entertainment and of course we feel the highlight was the performance by JD Danner and band.
Not be finished with our summer appearances, we then went to be at South Florida networking event. This was held at the Marriot Hotel in PBG. Great crowd and was definitely the place to network if you owned or ran a small business. You may even hear a new show on W4CY from the people we met at this event. Finally for our July engagements we were the sponsor of the South Florida Science Museum's Annual Health Expo. Lots of families. Lots of interactive exhibits and all in all a great event for young and old alike.

Well, July is coming to a close and August leaves little time to rest.
In August we are a main sponsor for the 1st Annual Royal Palm Folk & Acoustic Festival. It will be taking place in veterans park in Royal Palm Beach. August 1st will be a taste of the event with a pre-concert and open mic. from 3Pm till 9 PM. Plenty of music. Plenty of fun. On August 8th is the main festival 11AM till the wee hours of the moring, we will be broadcasting live and there will be over 18 well known acts.
Please check out the festival site by going to www.royalpalmfestival.com or go to www.w4cy.com and click on events.

Stay in touch to hear about more evets coming up. A tribute to Elvis on August 15th, A golf Tournament, A concert series at the Lake Worth Playhouse, and a Pro- celebrity tennis exhibition with the Roddick Foundation.

Pleanty of stuff in our future. WE WANT YOU TO BE PART OF IT.
Become a frind of W4CY on facebook. Hoping to hear from you soon. You will be hearing from us.

FanBase and Hentai, all guys no girl

Hello to the FanBase army, this is Danny Ryde. Last week’s show was more perverted then most but we had a good reason. The show was all about Hentai (Japanese anime porn). Unfortunately Krysta was sick (Yea Right) for this show so she couldn't be with us. However we did have a guest host with us so we were able to manage. Our guest host was our good friend Fearless Leader, who we all knew from FAU. On last weeks show we had our first real song request. the song was Hare Hare Yukai from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia and it was requested by Maddy Panda. Thank you Panda, for being our first real song request. After the sugar rush we went into our famous news segment WTF News. Our stories this week were. a teacher having a 16yo school girl massage his nether regions. A concert for the anime show Macross from singers from the series of the show.A Buddhist temple in Japan uses cute characters to try and draw more converts and orgy mania sweeps Japan. After the news we played a special song for Fearless Leader. It was Chain by Back On from the anime Air Gear.

We then went into our main topic of the show and it was Hentai. Hentai : Japanese Anime porn. First we went into our general thoughts about it and we came up with up this general conclusion. Hentai is hot and a lot of it is hilarious. Then we talked about different genre’s of hentai such as  tentacle, comedy and bondage. After that we played Almost Easy by Avenge Seven Fold, for Krysta because she loves that song. We then went into a discussion on Yuri Fan Boys since the week before we did Yaoi Fan Girls. The one thing that was made clear to us  is that Yuri fan boys like the girls have a signature shriek but its a guy shriek so its even more painful to hear. After the Yuri we went into the arcade block. The arcade block consisted of the Zelda Theme played on Heineken bear bottles (Awesome), then there was the fight music from FF7 piano version then finally Bumble Bee from DDR. After the Arcade Block we discussed hentai addiction. The signs that some one is a hentai addict is that they are extremely fat, perverted and trying to take obscene photos of girls cosplaying. Finally we talked about ways for parents to handle the situation when their kids find henati. The best advice we could give is this do not make a huge deal about it. The bigger you make it the more kids are going to want to watch. Explain to them calmly what it is and then let them know whether or not its ok to be watching it at the current time. Then we played What’s This by Fallout boy from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Then it was time for Big B’s and Evil Jeff’s Random thought of the day. Basically we just Rick Rolled all our listeners. We ended our show with romantic summer from Seto no Hanume. That was our hentai show we hope all our listeners enjoyed listing to it as much as we did talking about it.

Everything's Amazing, Nobody's Happy

I was going to write about something, but I can't remember what. I got up at about 10 PM and thought I'd just take a few minutes to jot down my thoughts before 2 AM so I can go to bed early and get up like a normal person.
However, I cannot sit down at the computer without checking my email...talk about an addiction...and there was this email from my friend Elise Mercado with a youtube click in it. So, course, I watched it. And whatever I had been thinking about flew right out of my head.
Here is a guy who is saying out loud exactly the kinds of stuff I'm always thinking. I love it.
So watch the clip and see if you don't agree with him.
I've got Thursday's radio broadcast to think about. Anyone have a great business topic they think needs addressing on the air? I never seem to have trouble filling up 50 minutes, but I'm always interested to know what's on everyone else's mind.
If no one has anything earth shattering, I think I'll talk about work and fun, having fun at work, working at having fun, knowing the difference between work and fun, knowing what work is, knowing what fun is, do they have to be different? See, I can just let my mind go and all sorts of things start falling out of my head. It's a little scary sometimes. I'm glad no one can read my mind. It's congested in there. And random.
I want to do a show on why we do things that we know are bad for us. I'm fascinated by the things that I do over and over that I know don't serve me well and still I do them. I've stopped trying to justify it to myself...no one else cares...but it's so weird to me. And still I do them. I get that we are all different stylistically, I'm not talking about that. I mean things that really aren't good for me, physically, mentally, emotionally. And still I do them. What's that about? Maybe it's Jungian. I fall into the "do things because they feel good in the moment" archetype. There are people who I know don't do things that aren't good for them. I mean I actually know some people like that. Obviously I don't know them well. They strike me as self-depriving, although that may be a part of my own unconscious (now unfortunately, conscious" justification for the things I do.
Big sigh. Not going to fix the my universe tonight. Hey, is that another justification?
Grateful for another beautiful day. I love thunder.

FanBase for 7-9-09

Greetings to all the listeners of FanBase. This is your keeper of the blog Danny Ryde. On last weeks show we opened the show differently instead of the dark choir music that we usually do. We opened up with an Aqua Team Hunger Force skit where Evil Jeff has me sexually assaulted by corn(the vegetable not the rock band). After the unwanted sexual advances of food, Krysta played our blast of sugar song which was True My Heart ,given to us by our good friend Jake who was supposed to be our guest host. Then we went into WTF News. Our stories last week were: Akiba Skirt Slicer Captured, Prisoners in the Philippines Learn to Dance, Japan to Start Gundam Academy and Japanese Women Crave More Sex. After the news we had a quick excerpt from our friend Jake who as I stated before was supposed to be our guest host. However a meeting came up at his work place and he was unable to make the show. He did however have a message for all our listeners and that message was you all LOST THE GAME. Then it was time to play Howling by Abingdon Boys School from the anime Darker Then Black. After the song we finally wrapped up a discussion topic that we had been trying to have for the last 2 shows: and that topic is Anime Club Etiquette. The basic rules are this, 1. Be respectful while the club is showing Anime, 2. Respect the officers of the club when they have an announcement to make and 3. Make an effort to make new club members feel welcomed.

After the discussion something amazing happened. Krysta and I got into a debate over the name if our next song. It was Stroke 9 kick some ass. She thought it was called how many people want to kick some ass and I thought it was just kick some ass. So Krysta looked it up and it turned out that I was right. I was so happy to finally be right about something. This little thing made my whole day. After my glorious moment went on to our main discussion topic which is Yaoi Fan Girls. Yaoi Fan Girls are girls who are obsessed with male homosexual relationships in anime and manga. We talked about our own experiences with them and what we thought about them and in the midst of the discussion we discovered that Krysta is not a yaoi fan girl. Then we played the Arcade Block were most of the music was picked out by our guest host ghost Jake. The songs we played were: Mortal Kombat theme from the Immortals, Di Ken Kai from deaths row from DDR and then there was the Mega Man Theme techno mix. Then we talked briefly about Heram anime. Basically we just listed reasons why we liked or didn't like them. Also I couldn't help myself. I promoted a new comic that some friends of mine and myself are creating. Its a Heram anime set in Hell. We don't have a name for it yet but we will soon. We then had our media release and game cheat codes. Then we played Battle Without Honor from Kill Bill vol 1. Then we had Evil Jeff and Big B’s random thought of the day where Big B got assaulted by corn. We then ended the show with O2 by Orange Range from Code Gease Season 2. That was our show for 7-9-09. Be sure to tune in next week for more randomness and fun.

Make sure to tell all your friends about Fan Base. Keep listening. Become a fan of FanBase on face Book. In the next few weeks we will start giving away some prizes. You have to listen to win the prizes.

Back on the air

So, on the air yesterday with Dean and Peter after being off for about three months. Felt really good.
Looking forward to next week and talking business with listeners. What would you like to talk about? Send in topics, comments, interests, pet peeves and we'll see about discussing them together.
Read a little interesting thing today. On July 13th, the moon will be in the exact same position as it was in France on the night Vincent Van Gogh looked at the sky and was inspired to paint Moonrise. While it won't look the same here as it does in France, it does seem kind of poetic to me and I'm going to make sure to keep watch for the moonrise here in South Florida.
I've had a really good week. I hope you have, too. What makes a good week for you? For me, it's getting done the things that need doing, working with people who really want to be better at what they do, want to grow their businesses or are serious about changing careers. It's being at the dog park with Hope a couple of times, visiting with people on the block and in the neighborhood, seeing a good movie, taking my vitamins. Nothing earth shattering and in fact rather mundane. What can I say? I'm easy.
Life is very unpredictable. We try to believe that we can control it, but really we can't. Not even one little bit, but we can control our response to the things that happen to us and around us. We can be thoughtful about the choices we make. And we have to acknowledge that we make choices all the time. When people tell me they aren't at work by choice I have to ask them who got them out of bed, washed, dressed, fed and out the door. Who got them to the door at work. Who opened the door and walked in. The motivation for why people are at work is as different as the number of people in the room, but everyone is there by choice. Hate what you do? Make a different choice or make it better.
We tend to give our power away and pretend that we're victims when we aren't. I don't know why we do that. Maybe it makes it easier to stay where we are and not have to change. Change is painful...even good change is painful. Change means leaving something behind. losing something...even if it's something we hate. I went to a leadership week once and the facilitator said. "All change is loss; all loss must be mourned." I fought that, but now it's almost 30 years later and I think it's probably true. Patricia Sun says, "We are what we resist." I absolutely hate to think that it's true, but I know that it is. I know that when I am in resistance to someone or something I need to go look in the mirror and see what's there.
For the moment, give yourself permission to just be. It's Friday. Put the doing away. We are human beings, not human doings. Turn off the computer, the cell phone, the fax machine.
And Be.

Zaldiva Comics and FanBase

Hello all happy FanBase listeners this is Danny Ryde. Last week’s show was a bit more serious then usual but it was still fun. First our intro got all screwy because we were trying for something new and it didn't work out so well but we saved it by doing our normal opening. We then kicked the show off the show with our blast of sugar. This week it was Scarlet from the anime Karin. After that we went into WTF News. The stories this week were Husband and wife toilet spying ended, Pervert steals 500 school uniforms, Police called over melting ice cream and the further difficulties of the visual novel industry in Japan. Then we played Inner Universe by Yoko Kano from Ghost in the Shell. We then went into part 2 of a discussion we had on the previous show and that was Anime Club Etiquette. However the only part we really got to was no talking while the club officers are talking to the club. After our small discussion we played, not an anime song but a visual K song. We played Shokubeni by the band Dir En Grey from their album Vulgar. After Dir En Grey it was time for our special guest Jeff the owner of Zaldiva Comics.

We talked to Jeff about how he came up with the name Zaldiva for his shop. To create the name Jeff took a Cuban name and twisted it around to be a word that doesn't really mean anything and thus he came up with Zaldiva. Jeff then went on to list some of the products that Zaldiva sells. They have comic’s, graphic novels, statues, action figures, cards, basically everything that a cool comic book shop has. One thing that was very interesting about Zaldiva Comics is that unlike most comic book shops, they are publicly traded on the stock market. Also they are licensed to sell merchandise  on Ebay. Zaldiva is a great comic shop to go visit they have a ton of collectable merchandise that a fan of any series from the X-men to Star Trek would be impressed. Their address is 331 East Commercial Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, their phone number is 954-938-4133and they have two websites, www.ZALDIVA.com and www.zaldivacomics.com. Go and check this store out you will be thoroughly impressed by their selection of merchandise and the incredible service they offer. Also when you checkout type in: postcard15 and you’ll get 15% off your first order and be sure to tell them you heard about them on FanBase. After our interview with Jeff we went into the arcade block. This week in the block we had Blow Me Away by Breaking Benjamin from Halo 2, Emiya from the visual novel Fate Stay Night and then the Mario Mix from Step Mania. The we went into a review of the box office hit Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. All I will say is that the movie is awesome it is a great sequel to the first film and leaves it open for more. My advice is go and see it RIGHT NOW. After the review we went into another topic of discussion and that is Racism in anime. In anime a majority of the time African American characters are portrayed in a racist way. Look at the character Mr.Popo, he is drawn as a short black person with extremely dark skin, big white eyes and big red lips. Mr. Popo in my opinion is a stereotype of the early 1900 minstrel shows. For more examples of racism in anime go check out the anime Cowboy Bebop and watch the episode Mushroom Samba. After our discussion we went into media releases and then Big B and Evil Jeff’s random thought of the day. This week Evil Jeff got a girl pregnant and was wondering what to do. Big B’s response was simple “Do a Barrel role”. After that we closed the show with the song Godzilla by Blue Oyster Cult. That’s last weeks show of FanBase be sure to tune in this week for another exciting show where you never know what is going to happen. See you all on Thursday at 4pm.

Herrrrreeee's Lois

Hi everyone.
My name is Lois Levy and I'm coming to W4CY on Thursday July 16th at 1 pm Eastern to do a show called How's Business? Yes, yes I'm taking Dean's slot on Thursday. He was kind enough to let me have 1 and he'll move to 11 am. I'm not big on morning so 1 pm will be perfect. I'll be chipper, full of info, ready to talk business, organizations, careers, management, leadership and anything else you'd like to talk about.
I've been known in my life on radio to go off topic and I would expect that will happen on this show as well. I'm sure if I'd been broadcasting today I would have been talking about the Michael Jackson phenom. I did election stuff on election day and we talked Inauguration when I was on the air that day.
Sometimes I just have things on my mind and I want to share them and get other perspectives. I like dialogue and thorny conversation. It's good to get lots of opinions, experiences and reactions.
So join me on Thursdays at 1 pm and we'll talk about what's going on in the marketplace, in the workplace and in the world of business.
I'll be on Dean's show on Thursday this week so give a listen and see what you think.
In the meantime, I'll use this blog late at night to just muse about what I see and think.
I think I'll like blogging. It's like talking without any interruptions and you don't have make any sounds.
And don't forget, Life in not a dress rehearsal. Go and do.
