The Beginning of Party Season

Hello and Greeting from peter at Peter's Livingroom
We are coming into the Halloween Weekend. I don't have to go all the way back to my childhood for fond memories of this holiday. Actually, I think I have had more fun with it as an adult than I did when I was a kid. Don't get me wrong, I had lots of fun as a kid Trick or Treating! All that candy! Toilet papering homes! Throwing eggs at passing by cars! Of course we did that immortal prank with setting fire to the brown bag( You all know what I am referring to)But as an adult, the escape from everyday life was more intense. Discarding the corporate clothing and be able to spend a night in fantasyland is the ultimate diversion from work, relationships and kids! A side note to this is as my kids get older, I follow their progression in what we have experienced years before. They are outgrowing the "kids Party" of Halloween and starting the "Adult Party" of the holiday. I remember years ago, but not so long ago, I had a Halloween party in Chelsea section of Manhattan. For those of you not familiar with that area, it is an area and the type of party you would see on the E Channel or VH1- MTV. Well, there we were. About 45 professionals. All dressed up as everything from the devil to an angel, From cowboy to a Box of M&M's. Happy to remember the one woman who came as a Playboy Centerfold. Can't remember her name, but she definitely stayed in my memory. Well, around 2in the morning there was a knock on the door. A friend, dressed as Peter Pan( green tights, hat and pixie powder) opens the door and sees 2 cops standing at the threshold. His conversation went something like this: "to the cops" Hey guys, Great costumes" the Police replied" Sorry Peter, No Costumes! This is the real McCoy". Initially he panicked until one of the officer said" Look, No problems here, but some of the old people in the building complained of the noise. Do us a favor. Just tone it down a bit. We don't want to have to come back". Well, for the next 1/2 hour we toned it down and then went right back to the partying decibel as before. Great Party! Great memory.
Now, with all the shows on W4CY and the media events we participate at, we get involved various ways with Halloween. Yesterday Dean had Fright Nights on his show. Currently at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Danny Ryde from FanBase is doing stuff with The Haunted Halls of Horror in Del Ray. I know the shows here at W4CY.com will be addressing the Halloween scenarios over the next few days. Personally, it's a Halloween spine tingling show at the Lake Worth Playhouse on Friday and some private and Restaurant parties on Saturday.
Got something special planned? Call in today and tomorrow to just about any show and let us know what you are doing this 2009 holiday.
Not only am I planning on the events for this weekend, but as far as I am concerned, this is the " Official Start of Party Season" It always seems as once Halloween comes around, there are Holiday parties each week through New Years.
Although we will be in touch and hopefully speaking with each other over the upcoming weeks, I want to relay the wishes for a safe, fun and memory making holiday to all. From Myself as well as the staff of W4CY- "Trick or Treat with care- Enjoy it"

Accountability

This past Sunday, I was watching Meet the Press. The group was in a discussion about the President and their views on how he was doing. This blog is not about how he was doing, but more about what I noticed every one of them saying. They spoke of Obama as someone who has missed the mark because he hasn’t taken responsibility. They also said (indirectly) that he hadn’t been held accountable by the public yet. One individual said that when the public finally begins to hold him accountable for his actions, he will be a much more effective president. I found this to be an interesting statement. If you think about it, without any political bias, the President hasn’t truly been held accountable for his actions. Satire shows, pundits, and others have now begun to make comments that he hasn’t accomplished anything substantial or done enough of what he set out to accomplish. Unfortunately, the President hasn’t taken responsibility for this either. In fact, one of the sound bites and one of the individuals on the panel commented that the mess we are in is because of the previous President. Let me ask you, as a business owner, how long do you allow a new manager to blame the previous manager for the problems in the business? If they’re lucky, they have about 2 months of the blame game…but that’s it. And even then, you hold the new manager accountable for their actions…without referring to the previous manager.
Again, this is not about political support, but about true leadership. Holding someone accountable is critical to getting the most of the individual and the team. If you have an individual who refused to be held accountable or doesn’t take responsible, what do you do? You usually terminate their employment. Lay the framework for your team, then hold them accountable.

FANBASE AND ZONACON

Greetings to all the followers of FanBase and W4CY, your keeper of the blog Danny Ryde here. Last week’s show was one of our best (What did you think about it). We had the owners of Zonacon the anime horror convention, Loretta and Marc, in the studio with us and we had a blast. Our blast of Sugar was Kimi ni Mune Kyun by Yuu Kobayashi from the anime Maria Holic. Then we went into WTF News. Our stories this week were, Women strike back against train molesters, Fender to release Eva Ayanami Ray Guitars, Men are more happy with a little sisters and School Girls arrested for taking nude photographs of themselves. What’s the most disturbing story you’ve heard about in Japan or in the fan community? Then we played I can’t be cool by ILaria Graziano from Ghost in the Shell SLC. After that Loretta had to give a shout out to Tuesday (Dazzler in X-Men Origins Wolverine), who we thank immensely for listening to our show. We then had Loretta and Marc talk all about Zonacon. First and foremost I personally just want to say how much I admire Loretta and Marc because after they attended so many anime/comic conventions they like so many other fans thought that they could do better, however unlike so many other fans they got off their butts and actually did something by creating Zonacon. Then we found out that there will be anime speed dating at Zonacon and we are going to get Big B to take part in it. Then we learned that Zonacon originally started out as a comic book show, then the second year they took in vendors from an anime convention that was going out of business. So Zonacon has been around for a while however this is the first year where it’s an anime/horror convention. We then learned that there is a mystery murder event taking place at Zona of which I will be taking part in and thanks to that I have to cosplay as Yagami Light from Death Note (Good luck trying to kill me).

Then we let it be known that Terrance Zudnich the Grave Robber from Repo The Genetic Opera is the special guest of Zonacon. After that we were told that there will be a zombie VS Hunters event and a Zombie walk. Then Marc listed some of the panels that will be going on at the convention. Panels such as Building Armor for Cosplay, a couple video game panels by Council Alliance including Why Video Games Aren’t Bad (Amen brother), and we here at FanBase will be doing a panel also but were not goingto tell you what it is you’ll just have to come and see. Besides Terrance Zudnich other guests of Zonacon include voice actor Eric Vale who was trunks on Dragonball Z, Rando from Yu Yu Hakesho and Yuji Kado from Blue Gender. Also appearing will be Sybil Danning, Jim O’Rear, and gothic models Ken and Vixsin , along with a ton of other guests. Then we had our drawing for a pair of VIP tickets to Zonacon and our winner was Sasha Beers. Both her and her boyfriend Tyler were uber excited to win and we can’t wait to see them there. After our raffle we went into the arcade block, our songs this week were: When the necromorphs attack from Dead Space, Hellp Zep from Saw and The Ghostbusters Theme. Then we gave our review of the Movie Zombie Land, and how this Zombie movie took a more realistic approach then other films also how we would survive a zombie apocalypse and what weapon we would use. Then we played a song request from a listener which was Beautiful World by Utada Hikaru from EVA 1.0. Then we had our media release and closed the show with What’s Up People from Death Note. That was our show for last week. If you are interested in attending Zonacon, the convention is Happening November 20-22 at the Holiday Inn at 6515 International Drive Orlando FL 32819 also go to zonacon.com for the info you’ll need about the convention. That well do it for this blog, this is Danny Ryde saying tune in this Thursday at 4pm at w4cy.com for FanBase. Until then JA NE.

AM I LISTENING TO ME?

Being aware of our own self-talk is the first step to empowering your life. What do you say to yourself when no one else can hear? Is it positive? Do you say "WOW! I look great today!" or do you say, "I wish I could lose 20 lbs." or "When I make more money, I'll be happy."? How do you become aware of what you say, and how do you change it?

Tune into REAL WOMEN LIVE on Monday, October 19th at 6:00pm EST at www.w4cy.com as we discuss this important topic with Carolyn Cohen, author, instructor, therapist, and intuitive healer. She will help us become aware of the negative self-talk we say to ourselves, why we do it, and how we can change it to help us achieve our highest potential.

So start listening to yourself, and listen to our show, too!

As long as you have an internet connection, you can listen from anywhere in the world (even your iphone), and the show is replayed every Sunday at 7pm. We're always looking for sponsors and guests, for more details, click here: RWL

Paranormal Activities

So I attended a sort of “séance” last night that blew me away. It was pretty intense and there were quite a bit of things that went on that were kind of unsettling. It was not the weird, we-are-all-in-the-dark-and-the-table-levitates kind of séance, it was more of an updated version, where the medium is facing the gallery and delivers messages from heaven. I am kind of a skeptic but I have to admit, the guy was pretty good. So listen in on Monday night at 10:00 and hear us discuss this very unusual event on Chick Chatter. And if you are a skeptic and can help disavow this information, well, call in. I would love to hear a logical explanation for the things I am about to divulge.

A Great Human Interest Story

Hi everyone,If you missed last nights show( Monday at 9 PM) you missed a classic.Let me start from the beginning. Last week I recieved a call from an elderly gentleman. He was telling me that he is going to be 90 years old and it was also his wife's birthday. He wanted to take her and her nurse, as well as himself, to the Lake Worth Playhouse to see the stage production of OKLAHOMA which is currently running there. Of course, much to his dismay, the theater is dark on Monday's. He searched the Internet and found out about Peter's Livingroom. So, he called me and asked how he could go about purchasing tickets to the show. After confirming that he knew it was a radio show and not a theatrical production, I invited them to be my guests on air. I immediately called the Playhouse and told them this srtory and requested that some of the OKLAHOMA cast come on this show. Lisa called me back within moments and said she had 3 of the cast coming in. I called Charles & Rita ( the elderly couple) and confirmed them as guests on the show. Well, 6 members from the cast showed up and we had a great time tlaking about the play, the actors careers and singing Happy Birthday to our guests. They were so pleased with the way they were treated, they couldn't stop thanking us. additionally, we gave them 3 tickets to a future OKLAHOMA performance. I thoughtthey were going to have tears of joy! On that note, I would like to thank the cast and Lisa from the Playhouse for making this a memorable night for this lovely couple. Now, it's tuesday and tonight we will have the colorful Joey George in the studio. If you are not familiar with Joey, he is an accomplished songwriter and musician. Performing all over South Florida. Originally from the NorthEast, you wouldn't expect someone with his upbringiing to be such a Blues talent. Well, he is. Claiming he has an inventory of original song that surpasses anyone, he has just came out with a new CD. Tonight you will hear him perfrom some of his new releases and how you can get a copy. As always, we will also be giving out passes to the South Florida Science musuem and tickets to this weekends concert sponsored by Live Arts.Hope you will join me with my friends and bring lots of you friends too. Rememebr, Peter's Livingroom tonight, Tuesday October 13th right here on w4cy.com

You Gotta Want It and You Gotta Want It Bad!

My last post reminded me of my sports days. Today is no different. Today I want to tell you about the Gorilla. The Gorilla was a senior in high school who was a hairy dude. He was so hairy, everyone referred to him as the Gorilla. Everyone even called him that in the halls between classes. Ironically, he also swam on the swim team. He was fast. He broke a lot of records while he was there. He was also one of those people you didn’t want to compete with. When you were in a competition with him, he’d look very intimidating. He was 6′3” and all muscle.
Before every competition, in the locker room, the coach would gather the team around and give a motivating speech. By the end of the coach’s speech, the team would be yelling and jumping up and down. The team was ready to go. Then, coach would turn to the Gorilla, the team captain, and say, you have anything you want to add? The Gorilla would lean in to the team and quietly and deliberately say, “You gotta want it and you gotta want it bad.” The team, still excited from the coach’s talk repeated the Gorilla, “You gotta want it and you gotta want it bad.” The team and the Gorilla repeated this over and over again, getting louder and louder each time. ”You gotta want it and you gotta want it bad. You gotta want it and you gotta want it bad! YOU GOTTA WANT IT AND YOU GOTTA WANT IT BAD! YOU GOTTA WANT IT AND YOU GOTTA WANT IT BAD!!!!” The team took to the pool. Each week this happened. Each week, the team won the meet.
I share this story because I found that the Gorilla was right. In swimming, and in everything in life, you do have to want it bad enough to go get it. Last week, I shared with you that your body follows your head. The Gorilla knew this and put the heads of the team into the right mode: WE ARE GOING TO WIN! While this borders on having the right attitude, it also reinforces that you have to be in the right frame of mind. How do you get your frame of mind corrected when you just don’t feel like you can get there? If you don’t have a way, get a friend, coach, family member you can call to get your mind in the right frame to be successful.
Remember, no matter what anyone tells you, if you want it, you can get it. And as the Gorilla would say, “YOU GOTTA WANT IT AND YOU GOTTA WANT IT BAD!!!!”
The colorful and very talented Joey George tonigt in peter's livingroom at 7 PM on w4cy.com. Singing Live and oh! his stories on life!

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

Chick Chatter is recognizing Adopt a Shelter Dog Month by dedicating our show this week to shelter animals in general and dogs in particular. Euthanasia rates across the country have decreased, thanks to spay neuter initiatives, but America is still not a "no-kill" nation. We still have a long way to go before we can toss out the "blue juice" once and for all. This month, the No More Homeless Pets Conference is about to be underway in Las Vegas (http://www.nomorehomelesspetsconference.com/) This conference is now it its 25th year and though I have yet to attend one of them, my goal for next year is to attend this very special conference.

Lately, there has been some animosity between some of the local activists in Palm Beach County. There are some who believe that if you purchase your dog from a breeder, you are going straight to hell when you die. There are others who think it's ok to get your dog from a breeder, and that, in fact, it's the best place to do so. Almost every person of average intelligence understands that getting a dog from a pet store is the worse thing you can do for yourself and for dogs everywhere. They come from puppy mills, regardless of what the store owners tell you. And yes, you will go straight to hell if you purchase a puppy at a pet store. I know quite a few people who would love to help you get started on that journey!

But I digress. October is Adopt-a-Shelter -Dog Month but truly, every month should be a month dedicated to adopting a companion animal from the shelter. Unfortunately, many believe that the dogs and cats who find their way to the shelter are there because of some flaw in the animals' personality. Nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, it is some flaw in the character of the person who had the animal, and not the animal himself, that is the real reason there are unwanted animals in the shelter. These animals are there because someone never took the time to teach them manners, train them to "go" outside, to be courteous roomates and to behave properly. Someone who had the animal during his or her "formative years" didn't go the extra mile to insure that the animal knew right from wrong. Or perhaps they didn't take the time and trouble to practice preventative medicine, didn't spay or neuter, didn't vaccinate, or didn't feed the right food for a tender tummy, resulting in a plethora of problems ranging from ear infections to irratable bowel syndrome. It's never the dog or cat's fault for ending up in the shelter, after all, these domestic animals have done all they can to fit into our lifestyle. Anyone who adopts from a shelter or rescue organization is a true hero for saving a life. About the only problem I have with someone going to a breeder instead of a shelter is that it represents a missed opportunity to save a life. But I recognize that there are times when one would want to visit a breeder. Say, for example, you have always wanted a German Shepherd Dog. It's been your lifelong dream. You checked all of the shelters but found none. You tried Petfinder.org and you called German Shepherd Dog rescue but the right dog for you is just not available. And you want a puppy to raise yourself. I can see how tempting it would be to go to a breeder. And as long as you do your "due diligence" and insure that the breeder is reputable, not a backyard breeder or a puppy mill, and that the breeder is responsible for his or her litter, well, maybe, just maybe you will avoid that trip to the Devils' playground.

Call in tonight with your own opinions, we know you have one! Everyone does, it's a controversial subject about which people are quite passionate on both sides of the issue. But as long as we keep the lines of communication open, as with the No More Homeless Pets Conference, we advance that ball just a little further.

REAL WOMEN LIVE SHOW ON MONDAY OCTOBER 12TH

THE FORGOTTEN RELATIONSHIP

Sometimes I forget where I put my car keys. Sometimes I forget my hot, fresh cup of coffee, sitting on the counter, as I drive away to a meeting. Sometimes I forget the directions of where I'm driving. Sometimes I forget to pick up milk on the way home. All in a day of my life, and all things that anyone can forget. But what about my relationships? Am I forgetting them, too?

Relationships with our significant others are easy to take for granted, especially when they are long-term. We get used to seeing the person everyday, and eventually we may not even really "see" them at all. We may stop noticing their lopsided smiles, the funny way they eat their peanut butter sandwiches, the way they laugh a little too loud in a quiet restaurant, or the way their eyes twinkle when they have a delicious secret. We may start to focus on what is wrong with them instead - the proverbial top to the toothpaste being left off, or they aren't successful enough in their jobs, or they've let their bodies get out of shape - or hundreds of other examples, all personal to our individual circumstances. Over time, the relationship starts to deteriorate and we wonder what happened - how did we get here?

So what if this can be changed? Better yet, what if it can be prevented? Join us on REAL WOMEN LIVE as we discuss techniques to prevent THE FORGOTTEN RELATIONSHIP! We'll be talking with Elizabeth Lerner LCSW, about ways to empower our relationships. How do you ensure that your relationships will last? Have you taken your lover for granted, or neglected to see them for the truly special person they are? Does your significant other still give you the butterflies? What can you do to keep the spark alive in your relationship, and what if your efforts are not reciprocated?

Join us at 6:00pm EST Oct. 12th as we discuss this topic with Elizabeth Lerner, LCSW, a therapist in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, who specializes in women's issues, such as marriage, divorce, anxiety, parenting, and relationship counseling. elizabethglernerlcsw@comcast.net

TO LISTEN TO THIS SHOW LIVE ON MONDAY NIGHT, VISIT WWW.W4CY.COM AT 6:00PM EST! Join us in the chatroom and let us know how you keep the spark in your relationships!

Your Body Achieves What Your Mind Believes

Most people don’t realize how much their body and their actions, follow what the head does and thinks. I think back to the days of swimming. When you swim, if you push your head down further than is should while swimming the freestyle, your torso will rise. If you try to lift your head the entire time, your torso sinks. What your head does, the rest of you cannot fight.
Think about it in terms of what you might be doing in your personal life or your business life. If you walk around thinking things are all bad, what do you think you’ll see? Everything that’s wrong with what you’re looking at. Same goes for the positive side. Neither side should be present at all times, as there are good points for looking at things through a slant if it’s required. BUT, after talking to a lot of business owners, I am finding the biggest thing that is holding them back from their success is their attitude. I have spoken to so many in this boat, that I felt it necessary to share it here.

After talking for a little while, most business owners realize that they are the ones holding back their own team and business. They realize that they have to go out and get their business. It doesn’t just come to them. Most of them realize it, some do something about it, some just wait for the world to run over them. I am asking you now, which one are YOU?

The W4CY Family

So Chick Chatter with M & M is well underway but we couldn't do it without the help and support of the rest of the "talent" and behind-the-scenes personnel. One of those great "behind the scenes" people is Chad, our engineer on Chick Chatter as well as the other programs. It's a great pleasure working with someone so professional and talented as Chad, and we wanted to show our appreciation for all he does for us by checking out his gig at Island Jacks on Okeechobee Blvd. in West Palm Beach. It was Bike Night and M & M are not Biker Chicks but we went anyway and all the bikers couldn't have been nicer. So we kicked back at the bar and had a couple of shots and listened to Chad and Heather do thier thing. And their thing is pretty cool. As some of our listeners may have noted during our last show, Chad is a Country & Western Singer and this New York City girl is not a big fan of C & W but it didn't matter, the music was awesome and the company was friendly. I was happy to see Chad outside of his normal place behind the booth there at W4CY and I know he was happy to see us too.

And speaking of the W4CY family, I met Tara at a little party thrown in honor of Chad's birthday and couldn't have been more impressed by what a sweetie this unique personality is! She's got that star quality and if you're a fan of Tara's World mark my words, this girl is going to go pretty far. You can say you heard it here first, gang, and she got her start right here on internet radio.

By the way, we met Peter during Peters' Living Room last week and got a little treat when he was wrapping up his program with a live banjo player. I haven't heard a live banjo before and it was lively and fun.

Also, I caught a few minutes of the Pet Health Cafe and got in the groove during a discussion on our dogs and cats nutritional needs. As an animal expert myself, I am glad to know this information is getting "out there".

Of course, our beloved Dean is the man when it comes to motivating us all to keep on going. He's the motivational speaker extraordinairre with lots of flair and he's on several times a week keeping everyone focused and on point.

So that's our little W4CY family and it's growing. It's a lot of fun working with all these creative folks and it's easy to get involved. I think anyone who has something they want to say, some expression of their creativity or artistic ability should consider getting their own show on W4CY and join our little family. You'll love it! We'll leave the lcd light on for you!

Do You Have a "No-Idea Zone?"

Many business owners fail to seriously consider ideas from their team when presented. By dismissing these ideas quickly, although dismisal may be the best thing for your company in the short term, you might be creating a culture of non growth. In my experience, many great ideas come from those who work most on the “front line.” It is crtical to use this information as a business.
With this, what feedback mechanism do you have for your customers and your employees to provide you with the critical information you need to make decisions? You should have a mechanism in place to allow your team to give you “great ideas.” This could be drop box or an email address to submit ideas. Encourage and reward employees who come up with different or creative ways to resolve problems and issues that have plagued your business. Sometimes the answer is rght under your nose! If someone comes to you with an idea you can’t implement, let them know why you can’t do it at this time and that you value your input. Internet radio is here to stay, by Michelle A. Rivera

It was almost like it was just yesterday that I walked into a Radio Shack in a now defunct mall in Lake Park, Florida, and saw my very first computer. It was a large affair, a tower PC with a big old unsightly tan monitor that sort of looked like a TV screen but uglier. I said to the guy “What’s that?” and he said, “It’s a home computer.” I looked at him doubtfully, thinking, “Whatever.” He must have read my mind because he said, and I swear I remember it like it was yesterday, “I predict that within ten years, every household in America will own one of these.” I thought that was about the silliest thing I had ever heard. It was 1982 and I am pretty sure that the computer in question was some kind of a Tandy Radio Shack creation. As a writer, I remember thinking, “Well, I know I would like to have one for writing, but I can’t figure out what other things the average home would need a computer for.”

And now, of course, I can’t imagine life without one. I’m thinking that one day kids will look at transistor radios and ask what the heck they were used for because they get their music and information from the internet and IPods. Of course they do. I’ve met people who don’t own a television set because they get everything they need from their computer. I did away with my land line because it was cheaper and easier to just use a cell phone for everything. Like that Radio Shack guy said, “I predict that within ten years when we hear the word ‘radio’ we will be thinking of online radio, not terrestrial radio.”

Terrestrial radio, of course, is radio that comes to us on the air. It travels around getting picked up by signals being transmitted from a tower somewhere to an antenna somewhere else. Satellite radio, the “next big thing” in radio, is when signals are sent to a satellite way up in the sky and then beamed back down to earth. And now, well, now there’s internet radio, signals being sent around the world via the world wide web.

I can see how internet radio has some advantages over terrestrial radio and satellite radio. For one, virtually everyone has a computer these days and I would bet that kids today get on their parents computers, and later on, their own, before they ever see their first radio. I know that my own grandchildren, ages 6, 5 and 2, have never seen a radio, but they sure know their way around a keyboard and a mouse. They haven’t even seen a radio in their parents (or my) cars because we all have satellite receivers. It seems impossible to imagine, but it’s true. There was a time when entire families would huddle around a big old radio with a scratchy signal listening to radio shows of every kind, from comedies, to dramas, to “soap operas”, so called because it was usually a soap manufacturer who sponsored those daytime shows aimed at housewives, or, excuse me, domestic engineers. This is also where they heard breaking news about the war, economics, sports, entertainment or politics. The president spoke to the masses this way. It was considered mass communication at its very best and nobody ever thought it could get any better than that.

Then came television, and the world went crazy for the moving pictures and sound that came into the big box every night all over America. You were a big shot if you had a color T.V. in those days. And nobody ever thought it could get any better than that.

But then came the computer. And with it came the ability to share ideas and plans and creativity with anyone in the whole world. We can send photos and files and sounds and movies and all kinds of materials in real time across the world. We have entire libraries right here in a small space right in our homes. Entire libraries! And shops! And medical advice! All in right here in our own home! Can it get any better than this? Can it?

Another way that internet radio is better than terrestrial or satellite radio is that is interactive in a way that other radio and even television cannot be. Sure, you can call up a radio host and speak through the phone live on the air on regular radio, but you can’t show photos or video to that host and by extension, the listeners. You can with internet radio. It’s the ultimate show and tell. And there are no worries about the quality of the sound, because internet radio does not rely on geography, weather or other relevant conditions that can bias terrestrial radio. Sure, satellite radio is also not at the whim of geography or climate, but it can’t reach you in a tunnel, under a bridge, or anywhere else there is something other than the roof of your car over your head.

When I first heard of internet radio my reaction was: Well, of course! That makes sense, of course you can get the radio on the internet. Why not?

So my conclusion is that yes indeed, internet radio is truly here to stay because really, can it ever get any better than that?

The History of Internet Radio, by Michelle A. Rivera

Internet radio goes by several monikers: web radio, streaming radio, net radio or e-radio. Whatever you call it, it is a means of broadcasting information by use of the internet as opposed to signals sent out via satellites or transmitter towers. This means of broadcasting is called webcasting. It differs from regular radio in that it provides streaming media (photos, audio, video) by making use of the world wide web. In this unique way, internet radio hosts are able to get the information to the end user. The end user has no control over what is being presented, other than by setting preferences. In other words, the end user, the person listening, cannot dictate to the internet radio host what material to broadcast any more than a radio listener can. Consequently, internet radio is not truly an “on-demand” service. It differs from a podcast in that the material is not being downloaded for later use, it’s being broadcast in real time. One of the benefits of internet radio is that it can be saved as a file to be listened to or even downloaded later. If you want to re-listen to a radio program, you’d have to make a cassette recording of it. So in this way, internet radio has an advantage over terrestrial radio.

Some traditional radio stations run internet radio as an added service to their listeners, so that they can listen either online or in their cars or on their home receiver. True internet radio, however, like W4CY radio, is truly internet radio because it only exists online and not as an “add on” to regular radio. W4CY provides stellar radio programming because all of the resources are spent developing programming that is compatible with it’s internet listeners. Without that diffusion of resources, W4CY is able to focus entirely on its target audience, the internet listener.

Internet radio was launched in 1993 by Carl Malamud, a well known technological genius and author of eight books having to do with the internet and technology. His internet radio program was about the internet and featured guest speakers who talked about…..the internet. It wasn’t truly a radio show as we know them today. They were more like podcasts, meaning that they were made, uploaded, and available as downloadable files. A year after the development of software that enabled internet hosts to relay music over the internet in real time, the Rolling Stones became the very first rock band to hold a concert that was broadcast in cyberspace as it was happening. The technology was referred to as The M Bone. During the opening act, Mick Jagger commented on the phenomenon, acknowledging those listeners by saying “I wanna say a special welcome to everyone that's, uh, climbed into the Internet tonight and, uh, has got into the M-bone. And I hope it doesn't all collapse.” The concert could be experienced, listened to and watched, from the comfort of your own living room. No commercial interruptions, no ‘contact high’ from fellow concert goers, no screaming fans bumping into you. Just you and your front-row seat to the music. A truly “free concert.” We’ve come a long way from Woodstock, Baby!

In the meantime, Malamud was still working on the technology to bring real time broadcasting to the internet and succeeded when a feed went live from the House and Senate floors. Soon after, an FM station based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, became the first radio station to broadcast in cyberspace in addition to its regular broadcast. Many, many others followed suit utilizing a variety of internet radio software programs that were in development at the time. As more and more software became available, more stations went on the internet offering everything from music to talk to comedy and everything in between. There was something for everyone. A company called Broadcast.com was spearheading the efforts to get internet radio on the public radar and in 1998 the initial public stock offering set a world record at that time for the largest jump in stock offerings in the United States. By the year 2003, internet radio was a $59 million dollar a year business having attracted the likes of Yahoo, AOL, Shoutcast and many others. Three years later, that figure jumped to $500 million dollars being paid by advertisers wanting to jump on the internet radio bandwagon.

A survey conducted in 2007 found that 19% of consumers aged 12 and over listened to internet radio, meaning 57 million people were listening to internet radio programs. There were more people listening to internet radio than satellite, high-def, terrestrial, podcast or cell-phone based radio programs combined. Subsequent surveys continue to show an rise in the percentage of people listening to internet radio.

The ascension of internet radio has not been without its growing pains, however. There have been squabbles over everything from the lack of FCC regulations to lawsuits involving royalties and fees paid to artists and publishers. In 1998 Congress passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA required that performance royalties and publishing fees were to be paid by satellite and internet radio. Internet radio owners cried foul because traditional radio stations only had to pay publishing royalties and no performance fees. Some critics said that these fees would put internet radio out of business because they were so large that only big companies like AOL and Yahoo could afford to pay them. But even those media giants balked at the prices. Others threatened to move their enterprises out of country so that United States laws, and especially the DMCA, would not apply. A long legal battle ensued but the outcome was that the royalties and publishing fees would boil down to a flat rate that was more palatable to most than a per-song or per-listener fee.

As with every new Next Big Thing, internet radio will continue to grow in popularity and consequence upon our culture. With little to no FCC regulations, the future of internet radio is fairly bright. Americans have spoken time and again and have made their feelings about regulations and censorship clear. They want no part of it. Internet radio may well be the HBO and SHOWTIME of the airwaves with better programming and enhanced creativity in every byte.

Cyber vs. Sirius, by Michelle A. Rivera

When it comes down to which is better, internet radio vs. terrestrial radio vs. satellite radio, it all depends on whom you ask! We’ve all got our favorites, and I know I was pretty happy when I learned that All Things Considered and Car Talk (both on National Public Radio) were available somewhere other than my car radio and whenever I wanted to hear them. That’s something you can’t get from regular or even satellite radio.

It turns out there are really quite a few other benefits to internet radio. For example, it can be heard and followed all over the world, and with great “reception.” No worries about scratchy sounds or dead air. If you are in Germany and you want to hear an internet radio program in China, or Tennessee, or around the corner, you simply type in the URL and you’re connected. You can communicate with the host in real time, sending e-mails, photos, videos and entire files. This is a great thing for Americans living outside the country because they are expatriates or are serving in the military or for those who cannot find exactly what they want in terms of specialized music, talk or comedy on a regular radio show. If you want to share your favorite W4CY radio show with your friends in California or Australia, you simply give them the URL and they’re there! How cool is that?

You can also “pause” a radio show when you need to. If you usually listen to Pet Talk Café on W4CY on Monday nights and you missed it you can always go back and listen to it whenever you need to. And, you can pause the show to go take a phone call or bake some brownies or whatever. You can’t do that with radio unless you invest in some ancillary Tivo-like equipment which isn’t, presently, available. Getting programs this way is a sort of on-demand service without the premium prices. If you’re a fan of “Mondays with M & M Chick Chatter”, you can always listen to it the next morning if Monday’s at 10:00 PM is not the best time for you. Fair warning though, a martini will enhance your Chick Chatter experience greatly but we don’t recommend them for breakfast.  You become an archive subscriber in order to hear your favorite shows over and over again.

Because terrestrial radio depends on sponsors, it is only effective within certain markets. In other words, if the sponsor is, say, a local law firm in Knoxville, Tennessee, they would have no reason to pay for advertising during a radio program that broadcasts outside the area where they are practicing and seeking clients. But with internet radio, the sponsors can be local or long-distance. You can learn about non-profit childrens’ groups in Bangkok or Yorkie Poo rescue shelters in Buffalo. You get to learn about the locals where the internet radio is being broadcast from, but you can also hear of global goods and services as well.

Terrestrial radio also is subject to all kinds of licensing restrictions which usually confines the broadcaster to a specific state or region. Internet radio has no such restrictions. There are no FCC regulations either, so radio hosts can say or do pretty much anything they like, as long as it’s not illegal for other reasons, like maybe, I don’t know, webcasting a “sporting event’ from a ranch in Nevada.

Internet radio is interactive in a way that other radio broadcasting can never be. Sure, you can call a radio show and be on the air, but can you send pictures or video or emails to not just the host but whomever else is listening and participating at the time? That is a big advantage when showing off your latest hunk boyfriend during Chick Chatter or sharing your new puppy, Mr. Fluffernutter with the world during Pet Health Café.

As with everything else, the future of internet radio vs. AM/FM or even satellite radio comes down to economics. It costs much less to stream over the internet than it does for regular radio. No need for those huge antennas, no transmitters, no specially-equipped studios, no NASA spaceships needed. It’s pretty simple, really.

And maybe you can’t carry your laptop with you on your morning run, but you can always download your favorite program to your iPod or MP3 player for later on down the road. And yes, I’m pretty sure that there’s an app for that.

Nature Can Be A Mother

Nature and the Earth have always been referred to as female, (Mother Nature and Mother Earth), and we refer to her activities as cycles - the ebb and flow of the sea, the rise and setting of the sun, the circle of seasons we experience. We are encouraged to love her and are warned "Don't Mess with Mother Nature" because her wrath can be brutal. Many studies are showing this to be true - the landslides from deforestation, the eradication of animal species to population growth, toxins in our water supply from pollution. If this is what is going on with our Mother Nature of the Earth, what are the effects when we fool with the Mother Nature of our bodies?

Women's bodies are very much in alignment with processes and timing. Our monthly cycles and menopause, the nine month span of pregnancy, the aging process, even having woman's intuition - all of these are internal systems which we do not have to control, they just happen naturally, by nature. However, over the past decade we are seeing more and more instances of interfering with these natural occurrences, especially from the medical community. So what will be the short term and long term effects of these actions? Will the female body seeks its wrath and revolt?

Join us on REAL WOMEN LIVE Monday, October 4th at 6:00pm EST as we discuss this topic! On our panel we'll have Lisa Kelly and Shelia Love, who both have extensive experience in helping women and their internal Mother Nature!
